Music at Meadowside is planned to ensure that key musical skills and elements are taught through  a broad and balanced scheme of work, with units that revisit and build on prior knowledge, enabling pupils to develop at their own pace. We make good use of local opportunities, collaborating with other schools on shared events and visiting the Philharmonic Hall each year.

Music is timetabled for all KS3 pupils, and for those following an informal curriculum, music is delivered as part of My Communication, enabling pupils to use music as a means of expression at all levels.

For pupils aged 14-19, Music features on the Options Offer, meaning it is selected by pupils, in collaboration with their parents. The curriculum continues in the same style as for KS3 i.e. revisiting and building on prior knowledge, with the musical skills and elements running throughout.

Music is a unique form of communication that can change the way learners feel, think and act. Music forms part of an individual’s identity and positive interaction with music can develop learners’ competence as learners and increase their self-esteem. Music brings together intellect and feeling and enables personal expression, reflection and emotional development. As an integral part of culture, past and present, music helps learners understand themselves, relate to others and develop their cultural understanding, forging important links between home, school and the wider world.
